More Brits turn to glamping instead of holidays abroad
Friday, 26 August 2011 11:47
Looking for a quick getaway this Bank Holiday weekend? Join the thousands of Brits opting for ‘glamping’ – glamorous camping for those who don’t know – instead of forking out for a holiday abroad.
As reported by the Financial Times, camping holidays – be they of the glamorous kind or the uplifting, self-sufficiency kind – are becoming more popular because of their affordability.
Adrian Boots, a landscape ecologies whose business offers one-day and overnight “Bushcraft” survival courses in Mendips said: “It’s wrapped up in this idea of being a bit more self-sufficient, growing a little bit, picking a little bit, getting pleasure in making and reusing.”
The Camping and Caravanning Club’s 2011 marketing campaign pointed out that “being rich isn’t only about money” – fresh air is free after all.
The club has noticed a trend in 2011 for people to holiday at sites within 90 minutes’ drive of their homes, compared with three hours in the past.
National Trust holiday cottage occupancy was up 55 per cent in March, 27 per cent in April, 10 per cent in May and 5 per cent in June on the same months in 2010. Variable weather has damped July and August demand.
So there you have it, camping holidays are popular not just because they are cheap but because they make you happier, more self-sufficient, less wasteful, and generally a better human being. Hurrah!
